Following an extensive voting and counting procedure that lasted hours, the Punjab Assembly on February 24, 2024, elected Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidates Malik Ahmed Khan and Malik Zaheer Ahmed Channer as the House’s speaker and deputy speaker, respectively. Channer received 220 votes, whereas Malik Ahmed received 224 to take the position of Custodian of the House. In the meanwhile, Ahmad Khan Bhachar, a candidate for the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), received 96 votes out of the 322 total voted in the speaker’s election. Two votes were disqualified.
